AP Biology Lab 12: Dissolved Oxygen and Aquatic Primary Productivity

carolina
Measure and analyze the dissolved oxygen concentration of various water samples.

Using a virtual lab, students measure and analyze the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of various water samples at different temperatures. In the process, they gain an understanding of the physical and biological factors that affect gas solubility in water. Additionally, they measure and analyze primary productivity in a pond water ecosystem by simulating the decrease of light in a pond with increasing depth.

Comprehensive tutorial sections include coverage of the biological importance of oxygen and carbon cycles in the ecosystem along with how primary productivity relates to the metabolism of organisms in an ecosystem. Lab simulations include a demonstration of the relationship of dissolved oxygen and temperature and a model of productivity as a function of water depth. Macintosh®/Windows® compatible.
